I made the master template for the motor plate and associated plates for my project out of scrap 1/4 " aluminum plate.  I cut it out with a saber saw and filed it to shape.  The hard part was getting the indexing holes for the pins that will locate the transmission.  Everything seemed to go well.  I call it the Burt Munroe method of doing precision work.

I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, but I've read where people will use clay or Play Dough stuck on something to find where to locate holes.

Transfer punches make the job easier .

I am starting a 406 sbc build today . Scat crank and 6" rods . Todays job is to make sure the rods clear the pan rail . Then the rods need to clear the cam. 10:1 CR , heads flow 243 CFM @.500 lift. .506 lift solid W 235intake/255exh @ .050 on 108 LSA . Will use 800 cfm holley on open plenum intake . Kind of a 'shelf motor ' using the stuff left over from other builds . Going in a friends square body truck. Should be a torquey thing . Would rather have a performer RPM manifold but this is whatwe have for now . Intake is easy enough to change later.

Set screws will double as transfer punches.

The small GM V6 would be metric threads in the block as I recall. I have machined transfer screw punches for various projects.

At Hughes we had cnc files on many bell housing patterns.

The small V6 pattern was close to the Caddie Northstar V8 engine. One bell housing bolt hole had to be relocated to bolt a 700r4 to the Northstar engine.

Just random useless info.

Once I got the dowel pin holes the rest was gravy.  Finding the center line of the crankshaft was interesting. Worked on the frame some today.

My brother's wife passed away thursday at age 74. She had battled diabetes since age 15 and what seems like every complication related to diabetes. She was at home with family after several days in the hospital.

Thanks guys... My brother seems to be doing well, but it is early and he is busy with details from his wife's passing. His daughter is in Arizona from CT with her oldest son (22)..  My brother's  40 year old son lives on the streets in Tempe AZ.  He has not been located. To be honest I think it is better the son is not around right now.
