Today I drove to Detroit and bought another" project". It really needs nothing but a paint job and an interior. 1961 Studebaker Champ pickup model 6ET6, short bed 3/4 ton rated. Fresh 289 Stude engine with a three speed stick. I pick it up sunday and I will get some pictures then.

If you're into camshafts and machining, you might find this interesting. I found the link on another forum. It's a tour of Isky cams.

I picked up my Stude today, took pictures, and just accidently deleted them. I take more tomorrow. It wouldn't fit on the trailer I had with me, so I drove it 100 miles home. Runs good but the brakes are in need of help.

I priced paint options some more today. I found some reasonable stuff in PPG Omni. I checked on the Ford ruby red that you see on the late model pickups. The mid coat which would be the most expensive was almost $1900 per gallon. If I had a vehicle that I wanted for ever and wanted it to be in my possession for the rest of time, I might not balk at 4 grand for part of the paint materials. Possibly, the worst part of this is part of the aging process. I still remember painting cars in the 70's and buying a gallon of acrylic enamel and painting a complete car and the highest priced red was around $18 per gallon. LOL.

WOW!  I painted my 58 Chevy in the early 90's and remember paying about $80 for a gallon of light Ford blue, no metallic.

Never mentioned it before but theres a Wild Strawberry on 92- Ford trucks. Might be a thing to scope out.

Of the last two vehicles I shot, one was in Omni base. Med green met. Seems OK. Next one was light blue met. and we got Omni SS for underneath. Coverage was so poor, customer did all Deltron instead. Alls I can say is... I formulated my colors with price code of mix and coverage in mind. That wild color on Grape was level 2. Out of like 5. Hides in 3-4 coats. But I digress, the shop and jobber went in thirds with me on sprayables. All that is unheard of now but in my day (as a car paint store, any of them) we always gave anybody employed by a customer everything and the bill went through the man'f rep so the big boys ate it all. Funny how if one big boy stops doing that, they all can. ;) A quarter century ago.

I finally saw the shape emerge today, of the first '55 sail panel to bed side top transition. The fabbed new what I call bed rails (tops of quarters) are screwed on. Looks like a go.

My first paint job was centauri acrylic enamel , electric blue @$80/gallon . Do they even make that stuff now?

kb426

I checked and found no source for new centauri. There were a couple of hits for left over paint. Kirker sells some of it's colors in enamels.

You don't want leftover Centari, the drier is eating the can by now.

Every now and again I say this and I guess its now again...

Collect solvent-base basecoat remnants which accumulate and must periodically be culled as toxic waste in a busy body shop. Reduced or not. All one brand though. Dump all together, add some pure toner to steer color in (if) desired direction, check viscosity and reduce as needed. Add 10% +/- generic urethane clearcoat hardener and stir. Bird poo p  ::) wipes off it but not shiny. Nor particularly dull. Can last quite awhile, beats primer. You can skip the hardener if you like the color and just clear it. This doesn't address repairability but does address the cost and the finish should be considered temporary. Ish. And there should be plenty left over for future repair if you find a jackpot shop.

Thats just in case it applies to anybody who might not have thought of it. I bought a Monte on which the hood had been used as a bondo board and just needed something to shoot that with and look less ghetto.

So far the new hearing aids are amazing for me..  I like the phone app that I can alter the setting on the aids.

I was at a RV place tuesday picking up a part for the awning on our 5th wheel.  Fellow there starts asking if my glasses interfere with the aids behind my ear. I took my glasses off a couple time in front of him. His glasses earpiece is slightly different and pull his aids out if he is not careful.

Tony, what brand did you get?  I've got Unitron, and it's getting to almost 3 months and they aren't set right yet.  I'm going in tomorrow for another adjustment, or get a different brand.  My glasses always interfered with my devices, that's why I wanted in the ear type. I'll see what happens tomorrow.
