Do you have a flat tappet or roller tappet cam?  If a roller cam you can use any oil. If a flat tappet you'll have to use an oil with zinc in it for the life of the engine or add a zinc additive to other oil. I use 10w-30 Lucas Hot Rod and Muscle Car oil which has the zinc in it already. It comes in most common weights, 10-30, 10-40, 20-50. It is petroleum based, not synthetic.

I use Brad Penn 30W Break-in-oil on all my new or rebuilt engines, then I use Mobil 1 in every thing, even the lawn mowers.
Never had a failure, so it works for me.
Some people try to turn back their odometers
Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.
I\'ve traveled a long way and some of the
roads weren\'t paved.

my brother used to use Castrol gtx oil in a car he got from new in '85. I tore it down to do mods after about 100000 KM and you could have eaten out of the valve cover. Must be a high detergent oil as there was absolutely NO varnish in it . insides looked like it just came out of the cleaning vat. This was a carbureted engine , 2.2L dodge
