My son is looking at a 1947 Ford and the tranny needs some work.  It sounds like the synchronizer assembly may be wore.  I'm not familiar with these vehicles or transmissions.  Is there an easy way to remove the trans without taking the engine or rearend out?   Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Jack the rear end up high, drop rear end by removing the rear spring retainer, shocks, brake hose, remove the torque tube to trans retaining bolts, and pull the rear axle back to allow trans removal. Man. used to do that every weekend as a kid. Which has been a LONG time ago.

Is it a Car or Truck that needs it removed from? Two different set up if I remember correctly.
You never have time to do it right the first time but you always have time to do it again.

Never had a truck but I can see it would be different.

In that case, it comes apart like Okiedokie explained...Change the U-Joint when you have it apart ..Prolly good time to replace the brake hose too....

Ahh yes the memories, I've pulled apart a few of those myself.

First time I couldn't believe that was the way it worked.

Blew out one trans case, broken drive shaft, clutch replaced.

Almost got easy.

Thanks for all the input.   He has purchased the car, just waiting to get it home.   Should be a nice ride for the summer.   I may have to borrow it for a few trips to the DQ !
