I try to check the camera on the salt flats daily.  http://meso1.chpc.utah.edu/station_cameras/bflat_cam/bflat_cam_current.jpg  I am amazed at the beauty of the salt flats and the mountains in the distance.  The photo changes almost every time that I check the site.  Although the salt and the mountains are the same, the colors and the sky are almost always different.  This year the salt appears to have been dry most of the fall and winter.  I am curious as to how this compares to winters of the past.

I have speculated as to the exact location of the camera.  It would appear to be just outside the * area but I could be way off.  I know that when there were vehicles on the salt last year, I thought I could make out the pit area off to the right, but I would be interested if someone knew exactly where it is located.

Those of you who have followed along with us on our adventures to this place and those of you who participated as a part of our crew, know what a special place this is.  We were very fortunate to be able to make speed runs here while there was still enough salt to have a good surface to make the runs.  I know that they will continue to use the salt flats for speed runs, but I know it will never again be the place that it once was.   We were all very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.  What a great experience it was.

Some people try to turn back their odometers
Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.
I\'ve traveled a long way and some of the
roads weren\'t paved.

I couldn't agree more. The experiences and good people met have made for many precious memories.  :D

Comparing what I saw in 1992 versus now is a different world. I've probably said this before but when I was there it was obvious what was going on. The people with SCTA knew if they got too verbal that the BLM could send them down the road forever. I hope whom ever was bought off in this whole fiasco is banished  to somewhere appropriate for a really long time. I can't  imagine the pain that people felt through the years of seeing that pumping going on and being powerless to stop it. It's difficult for me to write about this and be civil!

I was told this summer that the stuff that they put back on the surface is not the same as the original salt and that it does not pack the same . It was pretty slushy from what I saw but as it was my first time there  , I have nothing to compare to . It seemed as though the longer wheelbased cars did better . The roadster we ran spun out once and did not ever get a full throttle run .

We could get a trip together to go to the salt flats in Australia. I understand the salt is still nice there.
Is it the end of this month that they run?

I'll try to remember to look for it when I go out ther this August. I decided I have to go again as a spectator.
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying. "Wow...that was fun!"

Yeah c'mon on down I've made it to Bonneville a few times,in fact I've only been to Lake Gairdner once for speed week. Lake Gairdner is in a very remote part of Oz, it's easier to go to Bonneville.
The salt is excellent and there is lots of it for racing.

It's a shame what's happening to Bonneville it's a magical place. I even met a few of you over there.
I maybe from down under but I know which way is up.
Oh hell there goes another head rush.

The last couple of days the camera on the salt flats suffered some wind damage but it should be adjusted again soon.  I learned of some more video links at  http://meso1.chpc.utah.edu/station_cameras/bflat_cam/
