Last update for today. It's warm enough that there is outside work to be done. I loomed up the last of the wiring underneath. All contact areas have double protection. I worked on the bed cover some more. Needs more. :)

C.K., I'd like to tell you that I'm all out of mustang parts but I haven't checked everything over yet. Does using leftover wire count? :)

I do like that bed cover.

Really interesting project.

Thanks, George. Some of my friends have been calling it the "johnny Cash car" when trying to explain it to non-car types. :) A friend of mine had an outside door handle leftover from a restomod he did for a customer. He was kind enough to drop it by today so the next time it's untarped, it will be installed. I'm ready to call the highway patrol and schedule a title inspection. Soon, the streets won't be safe. LOL

I think I will make a set of dies for the bead roller that matches those ribs. The cover is growing on me too. I still need to make covers for the 32 and the 51.
Now, I have a right side door handle! We all know that the passenger side gets used little in a bigger truck. That door operates almost like new. :) Wish the other side was that slick. I have a pic of another handle held as a possible for a bed cover latch handle. Do you guys think that would be good or bad? I'm also thinking about a hidden release just so the back is as clean as is possible.

I like the hidden latch idea for the bedcover.

Didn't the Mustang have a hidden trunk release?

kb426

George, as I remember, the trunk latch was one of the 1st parts I discarded. That car had been totaled and rebuilt. The switch key didn't match the doors or the trunk. The one door latch that had a key didn't match the other door or the trunk. That should have told me "the shape of things to come" Surely some of you remember that song. :)

KB, I   'ed at it like ten minutes and only came up with ideas for other handles back there. So I like the hidden release idea best I reckon. :?  :D Running low on mental gumption at the moment but am enjoying the thread  :D

Did Bob , thanks ! $113 shipping on a shoe box sized parcel is not going to happen .

KB , you could maybe use the hatch back latch and cable from the .......Mustang ?

This evening I started messing around with gas springs. In the theme of using all the leftovers, I have 2 - 20lb. units that I tried on the hood of the 51. I can have enough space to put gas in and connect jumper cables to the battery but to change the battery would require disconnecting the struts and using an auxiliary method of holding the cover in the raised position. At some point don't we decide what acceptable risk is? :)

I had wondered if you could engineer something like older station wagon doors where you could tilt up and down from the back as well as open side to side.
