Have a 89 AOD that lost o/d and second to third shift has changed so could this be a converter issue or is the trans on its way out.

junkyardjeff

Clip for TV cable broke so probably the trans is toast.

Tyically the second gear clutch pack causes that problem.
Welcome to hell. Here's your accordion.

the AOD will not shift to OD  if there is low TV pressure via the broken cable connection.

Reapir as needed.

There is a tool to set the TV linkage spacing    or a gauge can be atttached to the TV port on the trans.

I hooked the cable back up and its shifting 1 through 3 much better but still no o/d,I was told by a couple trans shops that o/d is first to go when the cable falls off and I have no idea on how long it was driven like that. Going to do a filter and fluid change  since there is plenty of clutch material in the fluid so it can be driven until a replacement trans can be found,I think this trans is going to be my first attempt on a rebuild and keep it for a future hotrod project.

I like those trans for projects because of no electrics. I put a Transgo shift kit in the last one that I used. But I believe in using od. in everything I own. :)

My .02 for what this is worth. I had one that started to shake..when it went into od..couldn't use od anymore..didn't want to drive this thing like that..car was as good as gone..junk..neighbour was a Seafoam rep..said to try some of their Trans. Tune..gave me a can..in it went..out I went..drove a few miles..then out onto the highway..down the ramp it started to shake so violently I thought I was walking back home..I shifted the thing manually in and out of o/d as I drove..shook less..stopped altogether and seemed to work fine..lasted another 50k..few years..still worked fine when I got rid of it..

likely you will find the 3rd gear friction pack burned up.   It is smallest pack in the trans. If 3rd does not hold , there is no over drive.  Over drive is a band applied.

3rd gear could still hold power, just not in OD  gear

AOD has strange design application, to me.  When it shifts to OD , the forward clutch is released, the OD band applies.  The power is transmitted thru the small shaft from the converter to the 3rd gear clutch, the OD band is applied.  2nd gear is still applied too, not effective though because of the roller clutch on the 2nd gear clutch pack.

either way....  open and inspect
