Stupid Noise..Fooled me..

Wheel bearing. Turn the wheel one way..noise goes away. Kept driving it. Finally the noise is there all the time. Changed the bearing. An easy job for a change :D
Noise was the same. Bad bearing. They will give me a new bearing.
Changed bearing again. Same noise :evil: Another bad bearing. I doubt it. 3 bad bearings.
Got out the ears..noise is not in the bearing/hub wtf :?:  Noise is in the pad/caliper..pad mounting area where the ears of the pads go. Wtf?

This vehicle had "All new brakes"..last year..not by me..and I never even looked at them last year. Or until now.

The caliper shims had completely rotted to the point where there were actual holes in the shim on the bottom where the pads ride :lol:
Pieces of the shim..out of the holes..had gotten caught..and were getting jammed between the pad..setting up this nice harmonic..

 I have never seen these kind of shims rotted..I thought they were all stainless?. None of these shims looked like they were stainless?

if its a front wheel bearing on a front wheel drive car..

if the engine to body ground is iffy.. there may be significantly more voltage on the negative side of the engine than there is on the body.. so the electrons will flow thru the transmission. the CV shaft.. across the bearing rollers leaving little arc damages as the roller move around.. kinda like dragging the tip of the rod quickly across a piece of metal.  just enough to do damage.. now imagine that is a wheel bearing race..   the current will either go thru the shock. or the steering linkage to get to ground on the body..

when i first devised that test.. 98 C2500 5.7.. on test 4..  engine to body.. i had 8.5 volts of difference.. cleaning the tight but caked in grease  cables at the bottom front of the block above the crank sensor cured the issue..

performing that test as i can do most it it in just about a minute...  at least thru step 5. but step six is really important... i have not had repeated alternator failures since.  and cars just tend to work better..  its something i do before i close the hood on almost every car.. and on most cars its the first think i do..
