Potentiometers are dirt cheap, the value depends on the motor controller.
Some manufacturers use 5K, others use 10K.

Potentiometers come in 2 basic types, linear and logarithmic.
You want linear.

The industrial DC motor controllers, usually allow you to adjust
the acceleration rate, plus max and min rpm.

When choosing a controller, check the input and output voltages.

Hello;
My 2 cents. Go to Walmart and look at the electric scooters they have. You get everything you might need (except a way to put it in your car) for about $100.00 or so. And those scooters really do scoot!
Other than that I couldn't be any help.

Scooters at Walmart for $100   ??? I will check that although I never normally go there.
And uncle Ian,  yes will get that controller. Plan on a small 12 battery (lead acid or gel)  and a 12V starter, probably Ford type as it has no solenoid. Will need to mill a keyway in the starter shaft.

any chance of a closer look at the existing motors and how they are mounted. perhaps numbers off them..

brushes are replaceable in most motors..  commutators can be replaced by skilled electric motor rebuilders..

here is a catalog that shows small engine starters... and a few other types of motors..

just thoughts..

First choice would be a Continuous Duty motor.
Like the name suggests, they are designed to run continuously,
instead of Intermittent Duty which is not.

Intermittent Duty might be rated 3 Minutes On/10 Minutes Off.
or something similar. The get real hot if they run continuous.

If I had to run a Starter Motor,
I would put an electric fan on it.
The bigger the better.

Of course, a fan, takes more power to drive, shortening battery life.

The two tiny little toy motors that came on it still work,  but the plastic gears are toothless.
I was assuming a starter motor would not heat up as it is a small load and so will draw little current ???   Any guess on the rpm of a starter motor so I can belt drive it accordingly for little kids ?

there are several samples here that might work..   the left and right hand long shaft versions might actually be some kind of wiper motor. but i could be wrong. i am not looking. .just relaying info..

they also have brake assemblies for skooters..

might have to create new transmissions... sheet aluminum some aluminum thick wall tubing for half shells at the end that the side plates can be screwed to..

just a few thoughts..
