I had a similar situation (temp rising rapidly at idle) on a '32 Chevy w/sbc & cured it with a round sheet metal disc sold by Flow Kooler pop riveted to the back side of the water pump impeller.Simple & CHEAP.
grandchildren are your reward for not killing your teenagers!
