Hi guys,
My son had a problem with his 2000 durango.
It has a 360 v8
It cranks but no start.
It has a strong smell of gas
It has a lot of gas in the oil now.
All the plugs are wet
It will not even start on starting fluid
Any idea on where to check?
I used a volt meter on the TPS and it checked out O.K.
We have spark.
It's just got to much gas.
Thanks Russ

1996 and newer need a SCAN tool...

if there is a code stored.. you can turn the key on 3 times within 10 seconds without starting.. this will make most chrysler products either flash a check engine light... or the odometer displays codes....

an OBD2 scan tool is usually the best starting point..

if you don't have one... check the HF 98614... others are just not worth the money..

lets get down to diagnosis... this is usually done after code and data are examined..

do you have fuel pressure???  can you hear the fuel pump run for 2 seconds when you first turn on the key...

fuel pressure regulator/filter instructions...

testing the fuel pressure is on the lower half of this section..

look at this diagram....

see the automatic shut down relay....

i have run into a bunch of worn ones lately...

its in the relay box under the hood....

please pull that auto shut down relay...   lay it on a towel..

pry the cap off..    carefully remove without stretching the spring...   lift up on the movable plate... slide sideways... use the side of a screw driver to burnish the silver contacts on the end of the arm.. and the tip of the screw driver to burnish the stationary contact...  reinstall the movable plate.. reinstall the spring..  its fixed if the contacts are not deeply dented...   use a clean screw driver with NO grease on it...

these are about 15 bucks at most parts stores...

you can take a short cut and just swap it with one of the others.... but its really fast to open and check the contacts..

you can use a timing light over several different spark plug wires to see if the spark is getting out of the coil.. through the cap rotor and cap.. down the spark plug wires..

i have also seen rotors burn through.. coils fail....

you can unplug the coil wire at the center of the distributer cap.. position the end about 5/8 of a inch from ground..  a nice bright blue snappy spark....

if you only get a dim orange spark.. that only reaches 1/4"  you have a bad coil....
