I put a Buick 231 w/ 4 barrel carb, dual exhaust, and a fourspeed in my 76.  I didn't like the ugly front sheetmetal, so i changed it all over to the 72 style.  I really liked that car.

I bought a new '72 to drive to Ft. Wayne to college after I got out of the army. First engine went at 6000 miles and at nine I was seeing the first signs of it turning into a steam engine again. I traded it on a '65 Corvette 327/300 horse 4 sped with 3.36 rear. There was less than 1 mpg difference between them on the highway at 70mph. What was I thinking?

I had one of the first V8 Vegas around.  Had a 71 that the engine went south about 2 months after I bought it.  The Chevy dealership would do nothing about the blown engine (it was from a used car from lot).  My landlord worked at a cab company (Junction City Kansas) and they had a 327 laying around with a powereglide, so for 50.00 it was mine.  My father here in Ohio talked to the local Chevy dealership about my problem and the owner told him if he could get the block back to Ohio he might be able to do something.  Dad drove all night friday night and had it back to them on Monday morning.  A couple of weeks later I received a check for 1000 bucks.  Chevy paid for the conversion.  WOW what a deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disturbing the peace since 1970!!!!!

We bought a 1972 Vega wagon used. I broke the opal 4 speed purty quickly. Broke th e cluster gear , bent the shaft that gear rode on. Fixed that mess.  Then the engine gave up.

Bought an engine - saginaw 4 speed trans from a 1974 Vega. Ran that awhile. Engine would use oil at 1 quart per 100 miles when that engine was pulled out.  Small block chevy - T350 was installed.  Started breaking rear ends then.  Sold car to 19 yr old kid.  He ran the wagon into a utility pole.  Few years later, I found our old wagon as an empty hulk  in the dry river bed out west of Phoenix while I rode an ATC

my 1st vega was a 72 hatchback that had been sleaved already, bought it for 250 bucks with a bad opel 4 speed (imagine that!)...
someday i'll run across some pics and see if i can post 'em...i actually liked that car, it'd run over a 100mph and get 20 mpg doing it...

back in the early 80's... a friend brought his stroker small block Vega out to the winchells donuts on sepulveda and plumber way out north of van nuys.   after he parked it he got out and left the engine running..  i walked over to see what was up... he mentioned that it would not shut off..  that he had just swapped on a fresh starter.. i pointed out that he had gotten the bypass wire into the battery cable on the solenoid..

i said.. i can just toss a rag over the carb..  but he said no.. he did not want to foul the spark plugs..   i said.. you have an MSD7A box.. it will light them fouled..   at which point another friend stepped between us..  leaned in over the engine and said he would pull the coil wire..  and proceeded to do just that before we could stop him...

this car had one of the mallory pro coils where the  coil wire was firmly attached to the coil..   as he yanked the wire..  it came out of the cap...   it probably took 10 or 15 seconds for the engine to come to a stop.. it had been idling at about 1500.. just thumping away..

but his hand to his wrist was covered in blue electrical discharge.. looked like michael jacksons glove..

he said he was OK afterwards.. but as much prodding we could aim at him. he would not do it again so the other 250 people there that night could see it also..

I think the last Vega i saw around here was in the mid 80's. Most had rusted away or self destructed by then. The last one I remember seeing was running around town with an exhaust system that exited right behind the drivers door and went straight up. The pipe ended about  four feet over the roof and had a steady stream of blue smoke pouring out of it.....only saw it twice.

I remember back in the Mid '70s seeing a catalog from Jegs that listed a chassis kit that used Vega struts and some rack and pinion. At the time I didn't think it was just to "front-half" a Vega but to build a "Funny Car" (Ha Ha!). It was probably when I was accross the street at the first Columbus Nats. GPster

Then maybe I mis-read and their kit was for making a chassis to put a frame with struts  under a  Vega. Or maybe they were confused and meant Chevette struts. GPster

could be, i seem to remeber that kit but not much detail about it.
i still like the body style of the 71-73 vega hatchbacks, still wouldn't mind having one.

engine would be the 1st thing to go

The last car my dad bought about a year or two before he died was a used Vega. I liked the styling of the car, but had to turn off the A/C to go up a small hill. My mom gave the car to some friends of ours who had kept my sister and I while my dad was in the hospital.

If anyone is interested, I just put a 4.3 ltr V6 motor in the classifieds here.
