I made a tool to hold steering columns for rebuild, it fits in the vise. It has carpet on the inside so it does not scratch the paint. After more than thirty years, it was time to make one.

to make a wing nut for that fine tool...

start with a coupling nut... and weld some flat washers to it for ears..

you might want to counter bore the threads out of one end...  so you only end up with 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of threads instead of 2 inches ..

you could also cut a slot out of a large washer.. and weld the now split open large thick water to the coupling nut.

sure looks like it would be easy to also use a Hinged pipe repair clamp of a properly selected size..   properly calculated to be lined with carpet

I figure the next time I am at the salvage yard, I'll pick up a spare tire retainer nut. Cheapest fastest solution I can think of.

weld a piece of pipe on it that'll fit in your "extra" engine stand...
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it\'s still on my list
