Add an electric fuel pump?

Mine does the same thing, Frank.  It cost more than the "base model" but less than the professional electrician-quality Klein.  Well worth the price.  Connectors that are different sizes on each end is a great option.  The ones I used were insulated, but I shrink wrapped them anyway for the extra support and moisture protection.

I'll be back there soon to install some replacement window inserts.  Te more I think about it the more I think I need to ask if I can get some pics of the antique sprinter to share.
