Do you know of anyone making a bolt-in rear cross member for a 700-R4 transmission in my '40 Ford with a TCI Chassie ? I have a 350 trans now and I called TCI and they don't make one.
THANKS , Rick

Does it have a stock type X member in it? If so, it will have to be modified for clearance on both sides at the front. The mount itself is 2" back from the 350 mount.

No it has a tublar x member with pleanty of room. The trans mount is a 2" tube with the trans mount. The trans mount is bolted in with 4 3/8" bolts with a flange on each end.

just curious..

did you see this post...

or this direct image link???

the Th350 is 22 1/4 from the front face to the centerline of the mounts...

the TH700 is 23 inches even..

i have never seen how TCI makes their cross member..

slotting the bolts holes...

slotting the transmission  mount bolt holes..   and using flat washers to cover the slots.. allen cap screws to allow for clearance between the bolt heads and the trans mount ....

depending on the tube diameter... and this is dangerous just to mention it..   having a shop put it in their bender  and kink it just slightly... a skilled tube bender operator might be able to do it..

since they don't offer a specific 700R4 crossmember.. perhaps its already slotted.. since its just 3/4 of an inch..

THANKS  !!! This a great article. When I went from a th350 to 700R4 in my 36 Dodge the trans mount was 2" farther back and I had to cut the drive shaft 2" also.  I think I would have clearance problem with the trans oil pan. This will be a project that will take some time, as most of Hot Rodding.
Thanks again, Rick

parklane

Why not go with a 200R4?? Seems to me that they are the same length as a 350.
If a blind person wears sunglasses, why doesn\'t a deaf person wear earmuffs??

The 200 r4 is the same length overall. The mount is farther back that requires a new cross member.

since i am great at coming up with off the wall info..

a TH350 with a 9 inch tail housing is as close as you can get to a direct fit for a blown up 700R4..

as there are people who's driving habits cannot seem to make one live... they are also going to conventional transmission shops for their 700R4 rebuilds..

A friend recently replaced his T350 with a 200R because [acording to him] it is the best fit with easy mods. I am not where I can talk with hin about it, but next week I will see what his experience was. He's no novice and will have the straight scoop on the switch. On the other hand, I have always found Wayne's info to be spot on. Anxious to see your 40 pics, my offer stands to post them. Joe

phat rat

If the T-350 has a 9" tailshaft the 700R will replace it by just moving the trans mount back 2". I experienced this when I replaced a 350 with a 700 in my cpe. I didn't have to change the driveshaft nor make any mods to the floor.
Some days it\'s not worth chewing through the restraints.

i had posted the 700 to 350 with a 9" tail housing info.. sort of off thread...

as there are some people who have needed to replace a blown up 700R4 with something else that won't blow up as easily ...

finding a 9" tail housing Th350 is not easy....

so running across one.. its worth sticking under the work bench or in the big pile of stuff just for the rainy day.

yep.. going from a overdrive 4 speed to a 1 to 1 three speed reduces fuel mileage..  and increases RPMs for cruising the highways...

more info... on the 700R4...  the reason i post this link.. they do a great job of describing the needs and must do's ...

700R4 / 4L60 – Transmission
"Advisory Tip Sheet"

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700r4.htm

and the parts list.... this is an impressive page in my opinion..

i hope that i don't confuse the issues or anyone...

Knowledge is Power...   and the transmission is needed to put the power to the ground..     without it.. you won't even be spinning your wheels...

THANKS This is great info !!!
The only reason I want a 700r4 is for the overdrive. The 350 in my 40 is working fine. I had a 700r4 in my 36 Dodge and I loved the lower cruise rpm.
The profile picture is of my new '40.
Thanks, Rick

HeHe ,there is a twin to your car going together in my shop , similar color, different wheels, so you know I really like it!
