Well,  I won't be taking the 974 Studebaker to Bonneville any time soon. So I am setting it up to run the mile tracks.  I took all the weight that had been added through the years. It ended up weighing around 5700 lbs.It now is around 3,300 lbs.  I will make a rear end  and tranny gear change.

I think I got regestered for the Texas Mile this morning. It is for the Memorial week end race in southern Texas.   http://www.texasmile.net/    Getting regestered on line is like trying to get rooms at Windover. Well maybe not that bad. OK no where that bad. IT WAS EASY.

I have been setting the 974 Studebaker up for the last month for this and the MAxton Mile in South Carolina. Stopping will be a concern. I have mounted two chutes on back and beefing up the brakes.

I wondered if your proposed trip with your wife to the ECTA Event last year might sway you in that direction. You might end up with a different pit crew at Maxton do to travel. Thanks for the note. Keep posting your progress. GPster

Harry

Maxton Mile is now in NORTH Carolina.

GPster,  Maxton is in the program for the fall.

Harry, Thank you for the correction, and I knew that too.

Good luck, and keep that chin out of the asphalt, bet it doesn't give like salt. Dudley and I are gonna come up there pretty soon and  buy lunch and get a book autographed [I hope]. Joe

Yes it has been moved to south of Beeville, not too much futher than the other place.

I have a  BW T10 that has the gear spread close to what we need. I am fitting it with a V-Gate shifter now. Can't miss a shift with the V-gate.  I am having trouble finding shift levers for the T-10 set up. May have to make them if I can't find any.

its a different shifter pattern... made from 3/8 aluminum bar stock...

3,1,R
4,2

and yes.. i did depend upon the shift interlock to keep from getting the muncie locked in two gears...  i was able to shove it into a forward gear.. and then push the reverse lever forward... and it locked the transmission to prevent it from rolling.....

or are you talking about the shift levers on the shift shafts out the side cover of the transmission...   i can call my friend george down at aa gears and shafts.. see if they have any used shift levers... they probably do...

if they don't have them.. i know of another transmission and rear end shop that might..

i was wondering...   if you might need to look at the shock damping rates...  i seem to recall that when the miles on the old airport runways were run.. there was a slight settling between the blocks of concrete..  so you get the bump bump bump bump as you run the track...

Wayne,
It is the levers on the tranny.  The shafts when in nuteral have the flats pointed back about 45*.  I have a friend close by that will look in his stuff tomorrow to see if he has some.
We have the adjustable shocks on all four corners that should help with the dampaning. They have changed the tire rules and I need to find out what tires we can run on the rear.

one thing about the shift shafts pointing 45 degrees off center...

be sure to check that the transmission is IN neutral ...

as most transmissions have to be in gear some how to put the side cover on...

i know that everybody has seen these articles .. but i was feeling shiftless ..

how about a length and width of the shift shaft flats....    i have a micrometer on my desk...  and really need to go down near there probably soon...   if you have that measurements... i can see...

i miss having the 3 levers when i had my GTO...  it was noisy but great...

Wayne,
Thanks for the links, there was some good info in there.
The flat hole measures .315 flat side and .610 round part.  all the ones I have are bigger than that in the .610 part..   I hope this is clear.

I built a 4 speed 56 chevy a few years ago only to tear the tranny up. I put in a Tubro 400 and never tore it up. It wasn't as much fun though.
The 974 has always been a 4 speed but it isn't used like a drag race tranny.   This T10 should do the job for the Texas mile.

Thank you for your help with this.

Well, my local guy didn't have any levers or rods. So if you find any let me know.
