Here is an update. I add a Carter 6lb electric pump back by the tank with a big Fram filter. I put a return regulator on the firewall and a line back to the tank fill. I moved the existing fuel line and the return line to the outside of the frame rail most of the way. They go over the top of the frame  near the rear axle. They enter thru grommets in the inner fender well. The previous routing put the line right over the exhaust and really close to the exhaust manifold. I also insulated the lines in the engine compartment. The test will be gioing to Louisville. I'll let everybody know how this worked when we return on August 9th.

The phenolic spacer does a lot to prevent heat soak when the car is parked, the bypass regulator and return line more for vapor lock at low speeds/loads.  Makers of the regulators claim an additional benefit is less pressure surge in the line.
