2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 auto...
Last Friday I had a water pump seize up. Changed the pump Sat. drove the truck all day Tue. no problems at all. Went out today to move it and it won't stay running at idle  :(  Seems to get a little better when it warms up
Anyone have any ideas what to start looking for

TIA

Idle air motor?

Idle air passage clogged?

Temp sensor is telling the computer the engine is at operating temp , when it really is cold?

Is that the same sensor that works the gauge?

Thanks

Sometimes = yes , sometimes  = no.

I do not know about that particular vehicle

A quality scanner that shows live data would be helpful

My son has one of those scanners..... I'll get it and see what it tells me

Got another question..... BTW haven't got the scanner yet

Today when I got in to move it the battery was dead...... (when the pump sized I run it dead getting it off the freeway but I had charged it) I put the charger on it for about 60 min started it and my idle problem wasn't there

My question is.... will a low battery cause problems with the idle control

I did a load test on the battery drops to 10v as soon as I hit the switch So it looks like it is junk

TIA

yes, a low battery will cauce some strange stuff w/puter controled stuff BUT i'll bet it just needed a "relearn"...
it may run wierd after you put a battery in it.
mopar seems to have to relearn more than the rest of the cars out there..
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it\'s still on my list

I had a '92 Dodge van that would run poorly and not want to idle, to the point of stalling everytime I disconnected the battery. I figured that it was the computer "relearning" after it had lost power; it usually took about 3-4 starts to get it to idle.

Crosley.In.AZ

worked on a dodge 2007  diesel truck dually with auto  trans... 48re

could not get the truck to drive -  shift  correctly , even after clearing and a reset of the computer with our scanner.

unhooked the battery for 15 minutes..  fired it up , took the truck  for a "brisk"  drive.  It relearned just fine then

wayne petty

tony already knows this...

but with electronic shift automatic transmissions...

on the first drive ...  after resetting the computer or reconnecting the battery..

you are supposed to drive it to 35 mph... with a rock steady throttle pedal...

don't lift to force it to shift.

on the first try if possible.

this lets the TCM set the shift points..

when restarting after having a battery disconnected...

i get it started...   bring the throttle to about 2000 rpms.. and as slow as possible... let my foot off the throttle.. a tiny bit at a time... taking maybe 30 seconds to come back to idle.. from 2000 rpms... this lets the ecm learn the idle air position  and the throttle position sensor voltage..

i do this last one on fords mostly..  but the tcm on mopars i use the upper one..

MrMopar64

Thanks guys...... I'll put a battery in it Sun and see what happens

Thanks again

also... if the alternator has a diode or 2 going bad..  the AC current can get into the electrical system causing weird stuff.

The electronics on vehicles can not handle the  AC current wave etc.

You did know the alternator produce AC current and the diode cancel one side of the AC current wave?

Yes I knew about the AC current...... Is there a way to check the alt other than just voltage output it's putting out just over 14v

I'm thinking that all that is ok because everything was fine till it seized the water pump

Also the battery is the factory one from 2001

you need a scope type of machine to check electric wave pattern on the electric from the alt.

wayne may know of a better method.

Sounds like you found the problem

Headed to a wedding today..... Will get a battery tomorrow and see what happens..... Stay tuned
