i would think .. it could be slop in the spider gears... did you run different sized tires on the rear for a while...

you will also need a 5/16 or 8MM, 6 point wrench to loosen and remove the cross pin bolt...   you also might want to pick up a replacement.. if you end up doing work inside..   they do break off.. usually at the last thread... so you have to use a carbide scribe to back the broken piece out after you center the cross pin to reduce pressure on the pin end of the bolt...

Well I looked at a junked Ranger today. The rear end was a code 86 which makes it a 3.73 and it was sitting up on blocks at a good work height. The wheels were already off it. The driveshaft was off it and the transmission had been pulled but the gear was still on the end of the speedometer cable. I went to talk to the yard owner and ask for a price but he was gone. Went to look at it again and because the front fenders had been pulled I couldn't tell the year. Looked again and found the year to be an '88. They're supposed to be the same from '83 to '92 but then I looked above the pinion and didn't see the anti-skid sensor. Looked at the dash and there wasn't any red light for the skid indicator and the speedometer showed 130,000 miles. Then I bend over and turn the pinion, it turns as much as mine. I hate to be stuck on the side of the road on my next trip to Toledo for a Crosley build but maybe I'm working too hard to find something to worry about. GPster

I am a pessimist so I usually look at a situation and imagine the worst outcome. Yesterday after I got my truck unloaded, while the sun was shining I looked underneath the truck to remind myself how bad the play in the rearend was. The slop and the clanging was due to the rear joint of the driveshaft being terribley bad. While it was up in the air we looked to see why the front end was thumping and pulling to the right. Had a bad tire with a big knot on it's side. Put that wheel on the back and the front end problems moved to the back. Was going to use that tire for a spare and run the spare tire. Of course the spare was flat and it is not a matching size to what is mounted. So tomorrow the job will be changing tires. Of course I'll have to be carefull with my hand til the stiches come out. I had a difference of opinion with one of those colored glass balls and lost. GPster
