needing some 1/2" open ended lug nuts that look decent.
found some zinc plated ones but i think they'll rust after a while.
anybody know of some stainless or chrome plated ones?
oh yeah, they're tapered seat not shank nuts....
(centerline telstars)
jegs and summit were no help...

I wouldn't use stainless, it galls without some type of anti seize and you don't want anything on your lugs.  I know some have done it being careful where they put the stuff and keep it out of the "cone" but It requires constant rechecking.

Call Joe at Roto-Faze Ignitions and Equipment.

He has the SCTA approved racing lug nuts.
They are stainless and look cool.

What I did was chuck the lug nut in my lathe and cut open the end of a chrome lug nut

The lug nutz for my torq-thrust D wheels are the bulge taper design .. I threaded the lug nut onto a bolt , chucked the whole deal in my Enco lathe (1985 vintage) and cut the end off  the lug nut.

Boat lug  nuts eh?.

How big is your "dinky" lathe?

Pete, aren't those the ones that are 1" across the flats?

Jay,
Yes the SCTA nuts are 1 inch across the flats.
That is why they are legal for racing. They are unlikely to pull through the wheel if they work loose.

That ain't so teeny-tiny.

In fact, I have one just like it.

Commonly called a six inch one due to it can swing a 6" diameter piece.
Lots of hot rod stuff you can do with it.

Atlas/Craftsman made a 3" model that's neat.
Came close to buying a basket case one years ago, but let it slide.

What do you have far as accessories go?

A four or five inch 4-jaw independent chuck from Bison (made in Poland).is a nice way to go.
As is their 4" 3-jaw.

Check in the Enco catalog or website for the "Enco" house brand chucks.
They're lower in price than the Bison.

Enco Sale catalog:

I have a 10" 4-jaw independent from Enco I bought several years back when they had a sale and it's a nice one.

One thing you have to watch with Chinese chucks is, the jaws can be out of parallelism so bad it's like they have 30 years of wear when brand new.
As I found out when I bought one for my 6" lathe.
Took it back and paid the extra for a Bison 4".

You'll have to make or get a threaded backing plate - spindle nose is 1" x 10 tpi, but check first.
