Has anyone tryed to put power steering in a 1947 Chevy with a stock front end? Car has a 3.1 V6 from a Camaro in it, want to use the power steering pump, trying to get it wired now, having trouble with all the computer units. Thanks, STEVE

Yes. I built a '48 sedan delivery back in the mid=70's and used the stock front suspension with all new or rebuilt parts. I installed a 70's full size GM p.s. box where the original box had been located. Built an adapter plate and either bolted or welded it to the frame - can't remember the details now.

I made a pitman arm out of the p.s. arm and the part of the stock arm that has the two tie rod end holes. Basically duplicated the stock arm configuration using part of each arm. I trimmed both so they would nest together and fastened them together with a couple grade 5  flat head bolts. When I was satisfied with the fit and function I arc welded them together bolts and all. Worked great and was still going stron when I last saw the car in the late 80's

I had a G.M. rack on my '46 chevy with the stock steering/suspension for a while. It worked o.k. but due to my lack of suspension smarts at the time it bumped steered badly. The bumpsteer was totally my fault as I didn't know how to locate the rack to keep the bumpsteer to a minimum. I eventually installed a Must. II under it, but if i were to do it again I know now that it can be done without the bumpsteer.

I put a Buick Station wagon Saginaw power steering box in a 66 Rambler American.  I made brackets to mount the pump on the right side of the engine which is normal for the Rambler.  I used the pump from the old Buick as well.  I got hoses made up at a Truck repair facility.  I too mated two halves of the Pitman arms with weld.  It worked real good and we sold the car a few years back but I see it occasionally.  The new owner says that it still works perfect.

Thanks, for the info, just helped a guy change his power steering box in a 66 Merlin(AMC) it used a GM box with an adapter,  was thinking about useing this type of box, just have to make an daapter for the 47, I didn't know if the stock steering would work with it, guess it will, a good project, now to figure out the adapter. :)
