Thanks everyone for your input.  I haven't had a chance to update how this came out or even hardly check the Internet due to getting ready for my youngest son's approaching High School graduation, 2 business trips out of state, and preparing for start up on a big, new customer.  All good stuff but not much car time!  In fact I probably screwed it up to begin with by trying to do too much work in too little time.  By now I should know, a job takes as long as it takes, not a minute less.  Anyway, I removed the broken parts, drained the oil, and flushed with some mineral spirits.  I let the solvent evaporate for 24hrs then installed the new parts and buttoned it all up.  The engine turned over smoothly by hand so time to put the plugs back and fire it up.  It's been running like a top for 2 weeks now, no real harm except to my ego.
