I recently tried to get a title from one of the advertised "Title Suppliers".  I sent in the VIN that was stamped on the drivers side frame rail in three different places.  They rejected my application because they said that the serial number was no where close to what a 46-48 Ford coupe should be.  Its the only number on the frame.

Can anyone supply me with a web site or other place that lists years and serial numbers/Vin's for 46-48 Ford's?.  I had one website a while back but cant find it again and Google isn't much help.

TIA

Those title suppliers aren't doing anything that you can't do yourself. I don't know about your state, but in Michigan, all you need to do is go to the sec of state with your vin and they will give you a title. I just went through that with a 1965 Plymouth. I got a paper from the state. All it asked for was the vin, the year, make and there was a place to sign stating I was the owner. A week later I had a title.

Thanks, that helps a lot.  Im still in the dark a little though because the VIN on my car should have a 3 number prefix before the actual VIN and it doesent.

Thanks again

Forgot to add, my vin on my 46 is 99A followed by six digits. I am pretty sure that 99A was Ford's id for 46's. I know 40's are O1A.  Don't know if 47-48 were the same or not. However, I bet if you add the prefix you will have your vin. Joe

Thanks Joe,

The 47's had a prefix of 799 if it was a V8
The 48's had a prefix of 899 if it was a V8

My problem is I just cant find the prefix anywhere on the frame and when the troopers come over to verify the VIN, it wont match the title.  Anyway thanks for your assistance.  I keep searching.

The question after all these years is. Was it a 46 from the factory or some other year with a 46 front clip.

You sure you have the VIN, and not the part number? The VIN should be right over the front axle, near the steering box on the top of the frame. When you install a mustang hat, it covers part of the number.

Frank, you have a point about the numbers. There should only be one set visible and be between the frt X and the steering box

Since this thread started I have experienced the same problem as Midnightsun, I purchade another 40 project [tudor] and the tag agent would not process my title because it was a title from another state from 1955. The sellers signature was never notarized [probably didn't need to be then] and it was out of state. Suggested I go thru a long a difficult process to file a posessory lien on the vehicle. I sent the form off to title company and forgot about this thread. They returned it to me for "incorrect number". I had used the stamped number on the frame, but had forgotten about the "prefix" numbers. I will send it back and hopefully that will allow them to process it. Great info from you guys have saved the day, thanks for that. Hopefully Midnightsun has received his title by now. Joe
