I have been resizing to 550x500, 'cuz thats what I thought they had to be.
maybe thats why they are all "#####"

The width you have is good for here. You can go up to 640. The height can only be 400 I think, or somewhere right around there.

Hey dude, you click on "Image" at the top when you're done cropping, not 'view'. That'll take you to the resize/resample button.  Sorry. And the height size can be up to 480.
The 640x480 is there already; just click on it

opps that was the width. so lets try this at 480 height nope didn't work says 640 is max width and at 480 height mine came out 721 width. So here's 640 X 426
