Been wiring my car as a '68 Ford.  If I run the regulator wire "I" to the ign . switch "ACC" how does it excite the alternator?

It sets up a magnetic field that makes it start charging. As soon as it starts charging, there is power at both ends, and the current stops flowing.

Does it EVER run on to the alternator?  I only have a 16 ga. wire and it looks like I need 12 ga.
