Cruise control recommendations

I would like to put cruise control on my '39 Chevy for a couple of reasons.  One, there isn't a lot of extra space between the transmission hump and the brake pedal to move your foot around and secondly, I would like to keep my driver's license.

My transmission is a T-56 Borg Warner (Tremec) so I need the disconnects for both the clutch and brake pedals.

What cruise control do you recommend?

TIA

That is what I have and like it except for two things and maybe someone can help here.

I use the magnet for now on the drive shaft and going to Missouri this last time one of the wires that holds it on broke and I lost the magnet and of course it stopped working.  It took me about 3 stops on the road to finally narrow it down to the magnet.  When I stopped at Sam's in Okl..  Then I went and bought a * magnet and put that on and was back in business again.  So I'm looking for a better way to hold the magnet on.  Epoxy??

John suggested a signal generator for the speedo cable, but for now I'm too cheap for that option.

The only other problem I have with the cruise is for some reason it won't run over about 2500 rpm (75-78 mph) before it shuts itself off.  That is usually about my speed anyway on the interstate, but I would like it to work about 5 mph faster.

Other than that I love it and it sure has made the trips east bearable now since my legs and hips are bothering me more.

I have one of those Audiovox on the wifes 40 chevy.  It works good if you push the set button no more than 45 MPH. more than 45 it wont engage.  You can hit the resume button & get it up to 55 then it shuts down.  I may be an old grandpa but I like to cruise more than 55.  The instrutions said to mount one magnet on the drive shaft.  It wouldnt work at all.  I put two magnets @ 180 apart & got the 45MPH
Can anybody help?   Roger

I've been using Rostra units and haven't had any problems.  With the Torino I used a pulse gen. that plugged into the tranny, with the 54 I'm installing one that will pull the speedo pulses from the Dakota Digital gauges.  I had one other that I used the magnets and had two epoxied on the driveshaft and it would cruise from about 30 MPH on up.  Never had one cut out.

1980's Ford Escorts had a signal generator that will run an Audiovox cruise, it's in the speedo cable just above the trans. Couple of different styles, just keep looking until you find one that works.

On the one that won't work above 85, there is an adjustment for that on the servo. The one that won't engage over 45 can be adjusted too. Also make sure there isn't a kink in the control cable, that can cause weird problems too.

Thanks Frank, now I'll be able to pass you  .

When you say a "couple different styles".  Are you saying they look the same, but may or may not work?  Or are you saying some have them and some don't??

I have a feeling there might not be too many of those in our small junk yard here in Blanding, but I'll look when it is warmer and not wet and muddy.  I'll also have to look to see what an '80's Ford Escort looks like.  I haven't paid much attention to one make or another for years :( .

And Roger one magnet should work.  Do you have the dip switch set right for the number of magnets.  I could see it it is set for one and you have two it could think you are going 90 instead of 45.  Mine does the same above 75, you can go faster with the "resume", but it then slows as soon as you let go of it, but maybe Frank has found the solution for that with the servo adjustment :D .

Leon did the epoxy seem to be a "long term" fix??  I don't have a problem with the magnets as long as I know the darn cruise is going to work when I need it the most.

On that car I cleaned the driveshaft and epoxied them on, and held it with a tiewrap.  A few years later I noticed the tiewrap broken with the pieces held by the epoxy along with the magnets.  The cruise did stop working but I found a rock or something hit the pickup and bent the bracket so it wasn't near the magnets.  When I bent it back it worked again.   The magnets were there a few years later when I sold the car.  I also had one quit working and also noticed the tranny shifting funny(turbo 400), the vac line feeding both had cracked..  The ones I'm using now are servo driven and don't need vacuum.

Any of them will work. the difference in style is how they are attached. the one you want has a large speedo cable female end that will fit the trans, and a small or large male speedo cable end on the output end.  this will fit at the trans. If it has the small output end, you can make a threaded bushing to adapt it. There is also one that has a small male end on both sides, you can install this one at the speedo end of the cable, by using a long 5/8 11 nut as an adapter. The other styles have a clip that holds them in place, and aren't much use to us.

I had a aftermarket cruise control on a 78 F150 and I think it had 4 magnets on the driveshaft,I could set it at any speed but those older aftermarket units did not work as nice as OEM stuff.  Jeff

I thought you could use the tach lead on an HEI for the speed sensor on Audiovox.  I'm sure you can on the Rostra vacuum kit.  Also, if you have an electronic speedo you should be able to tap into the signal from the sender.

I'm about as far from an wiring guy as you can get....I hate wiring, but I hooked my Equus up using the tach lead and I've told a couple other people using aftermarket cruises to do it and it worked for them too.

I think you told me that before George, and I think I looked into it, but maybe I didn't.  I'll look again if I can find my instructions :( .  That would be a better solution than the magnets and cheaper than a signal generator :D .

Send me your address and Ken and Charlie I need yours also if you are reading this.

Has anyone had any experience with  Ultra Cruise that is sold by United Speedometer?  I am thinking of one for my roadster and it doesn't have a GM column that a lot of units seem to have activation swithches for.
