Late model trans question

I have a 92 F150 with a E4OD trans and I heard they are good for converter shudder which I think mine is doing,I bought it with 97.000 miles (I think it had more now) and it now has 251.000.  When I got it the fluid was brown not burnt and I changed the fluid atleast 3 times since and the trans works fine but its a little * at 30 to 50 after it goes into third and I cant feel it at 55 and above,at the last fluid change I added some additive that was supposed to help but its still the same so what I need to know is can I just pull the trans back and replace the converter or should I look for a lower mile and newer year trans.  A local good trans shop wants 1600 to go through it but since its only a 1500 at the most truck I am not going to spend that much on a trans.  Jeff

these tranny wear out several valves & bores in the pump stator and valve body.

I doubt a fresh converter will help much after a few miles if the apply pressure for the converter clutch is low.

If the mileage is on the original trans , it has lasted 2.5 times the expected life in the best case.

Would a newer version be better if I decide to replace it,the trans shop said something about a few upgrades in the rebuild so I am presuming the factory did the same in the later years.  Jeff

If you update the trans to  a later unit , you must maintain the style of solenoid pack for your truck's tranny  1992 computer.

Ford changed the solenoid pack in 1994 or 95........ then in early 1998 the 4R100 tranny replaced the E4OD trans. There were more electronic input changes on the 4R100
