Howdy Boys and Girls.
Got a quick question for ya.
The 287 in my Pontiac has an old oil bath type of air filter in a big canister type housing. The housing has a base clamp with a long rod that secures it to the top of the carb.
There is no screw hole in the top of the carb to put a bolt into, which is how all the fancy aftermarket type air filters are held on with. Most of the new types also use an adapter to fit the neck of the carb, which is also held down by the screw.

What's the most practical way to fasten a new air filter unit to the old carb?

Thanks in advance.

If you don't need to preserve the original oil bath, how about cutting the clamp and part of the sheetmetal away, using that as a base for a new air cleaner?  ...(This assumes the original is not a casting.)

The clamp screw could be shortened, as necessary, for looks.

A piece of strap could be welded across the opening, with a stud or nut centered over the carb throat, to tie down a new-fangled air cleaner.

Another possibility is to weld the  clamp/flange to the base of a modern air filter housing, but a tie-down stud would still need to be added.

I don't know what your present oil bath looks like, or what style of air filter you wish to use, so my ideas may be useless.

I had the same problem....... I took a piece of tubing that fit over the air horn of the carb  Drilled two holes along the bottom edge then welded nuts over the holes to use set screws in. This holds the tubing to the carb then I mounted the base of the air cleaner to the tubing. Over the top of the tubing I welded a piece of flat strap with the hole for the air cleaner screw ....... Man that sounds confuseing!!!  :?
