700r4 swap

currently I have a 88 chevy pu 4wd with a 700r4. the trans went out. Can I swap a 700r4 from a 85 chevy pu without too much hassle. I heard there was some differences between the two.

If you are trying to put the tranny from a 2wd into a 4wd the main shaft is too long on the 2wd trans.  I think the rest is the same.

The internal electrics will be different on the 85 unit.


as mentioned the 4x4 shafts and 2wd shafts are different lengths if the trucks are not both 4x4.

The 85 tranny is the early design on internal parts. Mid 1985 model year (january-85) GM changed the input shaft spline count .
