Ford 289/302 tranny question

I've never done much with small block Fords, but a friend wants to swap out the Mustang V6 in his roadster for a small block Ford and I'm wondering if the stock V6 4 speed will work. I think I'd probably need to use a V8 bell housing. Correct? Don't have a clue what year the Mustang 6 is.

If its the 2.8 from the mustang II era I doubt it will work but if its the later 3.8 I think they share the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 6 bolt smallblocks.  Jeff
