I about have my 55 ford convertible ready for the road and when I do I want to drop the top,I converted it to 12 volts and have not done anything with the original top motor and relay.  I am planning on updating it with one from a latemodel but would it survive awhile hooked to 12 volts,I know 6 volt starters will work on 12 but will top motors?.   Jeff

It should last for a while if it's in good shape. HydroElectric has a 12 volt conversion for that car.

I looked them up in hemmings and looked at another convertible place and those motors are over 200 dollars,I am going to the junkyard and get one from a latemodel and make it work.  I found a new cheap junkyard and I can get a top motor for less then 20 dollars, even if I have to buy 2 or 3 its still alot cheaper then 200.  Jeff

If the motor works good why not just reduce the voltage to the motor to 6v....... shouldn't cost more than couple bucks for a resister to put in line
