timing/ignition question

Perhaps you should take the distributor back out, put the #1 cylinder back into top dead center, then put the distributor back in. It is possible that it is one cylinder off roataion, and the distributor is twisted enough to make it run, but will occasionally catch a miss-fire.

Re-run all of your spark plug wires.
