Lets see
I sleep in Mannford, work in Stillwater, own a rent house in Tulsa and tree farm in southern Arkansas.

What C9 mentioned with the float level has merit as well....You will need to check the secondaries float level as well. The idle idle mixture crews appear to be working though, as you mentioned it tries to die when you screw them in.

There is an article in the last Hot rod mag. on this. When I set the idle screws I turn them out 4 or 5 turns. Then adjust the blades to the desired rpm. Then I start turning them in a 1/4 turn at a time. The rpm should go up as turn them in. Reajust your blades to maintain idle speed. Keep doing this until you have a drop of 20 rpm per idle screw. Lean drop method. On my edelbrock I also had to go up on the jet size. It seemed to be siphoning fuel thru the main circuit at idle.
It will be really easy once you find it.

EMSjunkie

I checked both primary and secondary float levels, both seem OK.
I didn't see any ancillary fuel flow coming from the overflow tubes, or anywhere else. no vapor cloud after I shut it down. went to the local fire house and borrowed an SCBA unit, sometimes it pays to have friends in low places

that is the only way I can stand to be close to it at idle.

don't seem to have any problems once I get off-idle. it runs pretty good.
runs 180-190 degrees. plenty of get up and go.

will try to get to the local parts house tomorrow.
Mondays are one of our busier days at work.

I'd now look at the plugs and check if its across the whole engine or just certain cylinders. It could be just rich on a couple/few.....Could be due to angle of the engine or something silly like that.

Is it idleing smooth or surging?

Thanks everybody for your input. I really appreciate all the info.
gave me several things to look at / for.

fuel pump is stock mechanical.
puts out about 6 psi

plugs look good. not black and sooty, but rather normal looking.

I think I finally figured out the problem.

it isn't carb. related at all.

my vacuum advance pot was bad

wasn't allowing the dizzy to advance at idle.

ran across a thread over at SRS regarding timing, got to reading
it, and it made alot of sense to me.

replaced the vacuum advance this morning, everything seems OK, but
I ran outta gas before I could take a good test drive.  :x

I'll try again this evening, after it cools off a little here, yes Tony, I'm
a wussy, I know to you 96 degrees ain't hot, but when you have
as much surface area as I do, you heat up fast, and retain the heat.

Thanks again for all the input.  you guys rock  :D  :D  :D

========  wussy....  :wink:

I rode my Goldwing to work all last week, I will ride it  this coming week too.  Temps on the super slab run 106 to 113*F in the afternoon

I get some looks from folks in their safety cages.  It may be that I have on my mesh riding jacket.  What they do not see is my cooling vest under the coat.

This may bring up the question of WTF is wrong with me since I have vehicles with a/c  to drive. I use the HOV lane on the way home... much quicker commute.  Since  Janice is on a cruise ship in the British Isles with her sisters, I ride the bike to work

of my shop

bad thing is... she still runs rich at idle  :?  WTF ?

I give up, I'm whooped, can't figger it out.  :(

guess its Ebay time, see what they got in the way
of carbs.

Another thought...you mentioned the fuel line pressure is 6 lbs.....Holleys don't like too much line pressure...6 lbs is a bit to high IMHO...Try a regulator and bring it down to 3 lbs.
