WZ Junk? Narrowing 79 Camaro Subframes

Remember the discussion we were having about using Metric rotors to narrow my 79 Camaro subframe, in my 40 Plymouth coupe? I could only get about 5/16" per side. Were you ever able to get the 1" you remembered from past swaps? Here's the gist of the conversation from July /04.

A friend of mine just spent $1000 CDN on the narrowed A arms, and I'd like to avoid that if I could.........

I will looked at them again and see if I can figure out what I did when I originally messed with this.  I will dig them out of the back room tomorrow and look at them again.  You are correct, you do not gain as much as I thought I had when I first did this experiment.  But I know when I did this on a car and it moved them in enough to take car of the problem.

Widen the fenders.  It only takes a couple bucks worth of metal and some time.

   

I widened mine 1 1/2 inches per side.  A lot of work, but it does work.

When I was picking up some new rotors for my Olds (Metric front clip), I found in the parts book, probably 4 or 5 different rotors with different back spacing.  You might want to make friends with a counterman and spend some time in his books.  I was having a hard time getting the correct bearing spacing.  The 78 rotors, which is what my clip is, had the bearing races too close together, and I ended up using 79 rotors, but I noticed that the wheel mounting surface is probably 1/2" closer to the spindle, which is the way you want to go.

I will take the rotor I have to the parts store this afternoon and see what the different ones look like.

I went to three auto parts stores today trying to find another rotor to measure and none of them had what I wanted in stock.  I have another source and I will get back to you when I find something.  I usually rely I Frank for help on these problems but I think he is taking a couple of days off and is out west somewhere.
