OEM gauges

Most of the gauges on late model cars are using stepping motors for operation. Can these be used in a stand along configuration, or do you need some type of computer to run them?

Everyone I have had has an ecu tied to it. Most have been on efi cycles. I believe the correct control term is pulse width modulation. Because they are controlled by pulsing current instead of steady current, It's beyond my knowledge if there is a way to control them without a specific controller. I'm not much help.
