Have you seen anything on the new ford crate engine? Mad for trucks it is 445 ci. Gasoline pushrod engine. Price is pretty decent too. Fita a 4.6, 5.4 transmission bolt pattern

I've been waiting for the control pack to be released. I don't want to be the 1st in line, either. Someone will find out how good this is before I buy one.

I could see Ford picking a new direction for engine development. The OHC engines have to be very expensive to build, particularly the 4 cam motors. They're good engines after multiple generations of development, but the LX and Hemi engines are also very good. They're cheaper, more compact, and perform extremely well. Maybe it's time for Ford to do a family of OHV engines.

Bolt a GM 4L80E to that Godzilla engine..  would make a nice package.

Crosley, I see a fair number of people out there bolting higher horsepower Ford engines to GM automatic OD transmissions including the 4L80E. I'm sure you'll know about this. What's the scoop? Just better transmissions? Better able to handle the hp compared to Ford OD automatics? Cost savings to get an OD transmission which can handle 400-500hp?

Ford has the 4R110 which is good for the power, but it's considerably heavier than a 4L80.

Better , wider aftermarket support on the GM. The  GM transmission will hold more power because of aftermarket support.  There may be a controller out there that works well with a 4R100, we have not found one.  4L80 is much simpler in design than the 4R100 - E4OD  transmissions

Even the owner of Hughes Perf took the 4R100 out of his 69 Ford crew cab. Could not get the Holley EFI system to be consistent with the 4R100 and the 500+ cid BBlock engine in his Ford.  A 4L80E was installed. Shifts great.  THe truck responds better to throttle.

We actually tried a separate controller on the 4R100 with TPS feed from the EFI on the engine.

Finally the 4L80 was installed.  Owner very happy.

I did see a blurb that Ford may be producing smaller versions of the 7.3 and moving away from the OHC platform. It will be interesting to see if we go back to pushrods in all v8's.

Thanks for info on the 4L80 option, Tony. Like I said, I see it out there but talking about it will bring instant hate on a blue oval-based message board.

KB, I found a link about a potential 6.8L version of the Godzilla, which is pretty interesting. Seems like a pretty big engine still, but this new move toward pushrods makes sense to me. Like I said, the OHC engines are good units and have a fanatical following in the DOHC versions, but they're complex, expensive to modify, and they take some specialized knowledge to dig into very deeply.

I work with a guy who has a 5.0 S550 Mustang he's put a whole bunch of money and work into. Credit to him, he gets his hands dirty on every mod. It's a killer car, with suspension mods, aero work, and a dyno-verified 700 rwhp. I've taken a ride in this one. It accelerates so hard the traction control can't keep up even with street/track tires and will scoot you UP the back seat cushion under power.

He's had to replace a whole bunch of bits inside the engine to keep it alive at that power level, including cam phaser mods and a special oil pump...not because it needs more oil, but because at that hp the oil pump will come apart internally.

Even the current factory drag cars from Mopar were equipped with turbo 400 transmissions. Very custom built transmission units.  I have not seen one of these cars in person..  the specs on the car listed the GM trans.
