Compact/Mid-size Ford power steering conversion

When I had my 1969 Cougar just about the only thing I really disliked about it was the Bendix ram-based power steering. The things hang down low under the car, always seem to leak, and use a slow steering box by today's standards. Borgeson has an integrated power steering box to replace the manual box which resides on all these cars...with or without power steering. It's almost certainly a box factory built for something else with the original mounts cut off and a new mounting plate tacked on. Two questions:

1) Any idea what this fits originally?
2) Is the original ford unit likely to have different pitman arm splines?

Maybe it started out as this one, meant to fit a 1999-2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Looking at the pictures, I think you are on the right track. Furthermore I think a smart fellow could figure out an adapter that would bolt it to the existing bosses on the box if they didn't insist it has to be a direct bolt on.

I just used a power box, that looks just like the one in your post, from a 96 jeep in my 64 Malibu and it's a bolt-in.  The only difference are the hose fittings one is a metric and the other is a flare

That would be the Jeep Cherokee, not the Grand Cherokee. There is a difference in Pittman shaft length, and mount location. I did the same conversion on my 65 Marlin.

As far as I can tell there are only a few things you have to get right:
1) The end of the pitman arm has to sit in exactly the same place it does stock.
2) Unless you want to do something fancy like fix a bump steer problem.
3) The pitman arm has to be the same length and parallel axis as the idler arm...or replace the idler arm to match.
4) The input shaft has to be close enough to the stock location to hook up in some way...rag joint, u joint, whatever. Even this "bolt in" replacement box requires the steering column to be shortened.
5) Sector shaft length doesn't have to exactly match if the other variables are right, but you can't cut the whole frame rail out if you want to be structurally sound.
6) No one says the mount holes have to match up. Drill new holes and use Jay Carnine's fine tech idea, the crush tube.
