:(  :(HELP  I have a 56 f100 with 57 312/fordomatic.  I am having trouble with speedo cables.  I have tried the 56 type and the later c4 type, both work a little, then stop working.  The 56 type sucked the trans end gear right off.  Anybody know whats correct??

Does the Fordomatic have a threaded end for the cable, or a bullet type end like a C4?

do you see the end you need here? http://www.speedometercablesusa.com/cables_and_housing_assembly.html

Long time no see.

Frank, it has a bullit end.  I'm trying to figure out whether to use the early one or the c4 type.  When you originally got my truck running with the early type, speedo lasted about 1 mile and pulled the gear right off.  I switched to the c4 type that was installed last, worked for about 30-40 miles and then stopped.  In the link above it shows both types in the catalog of trans ends.

So it's not the cable breaking, it's the gear in the bullet being destroyed. There may be a problem with the drive gear then.

You might try sticking a short length of the old inner cable of the old drive cable into the speedo head to see if it is binding. Back in my VW days we saw this a lot,
