On the hemi I added a GM typeII pump hooked to a Cavalier center steer rack. This thing growls like crazy. I decided to add a cooler in line. I had to reduce the 8an line to 6an at the cooler and it made it growl worse. I removed that and went back to the original hook up. Anybody have a cure for this?
Thanks,
Don

I have no idea if this will help you, but it solved a problem for me on my wife's mini van.  It was howling like crazy.  I removed a lot of the fluid in the reservoir and replaced with a power steering additive sold by Lucas Oil.  I am not a fan of mechanic in a can, but this stuff worked for me.  That was 125,000 miles ago and it is still quiet.

My 2 cents.

Do yo have all the air out of the system? I have always been under the assumption that the noise is caused by air in the lines or a bad pump.

If it were a Mustang pump KB would tell you to replace the pump. :)
You never have time to do it right the first time but you always have time to do it again.

Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.
I\'ve traveled a long way and some of the

how big is the restriction at the pump outlet fitting...  that controls the volume that gets sent thru the lines.. the amount of washers stacked under the head of the filter screen on the plunger sets the pressure..

what did the pump come off of.. a conventional power steering box..

since i don't know which fitting you are using.. inverted flair 3/8.. inverted flair metric  thread..   O ring flair.. or an aftermarket SAE flare version..

do you have a power steering pump tester kicking around or the ability to borrow one..  a power steering tester has a high pressure needle valve to reduce flow while monitoring the pump max pressure and bypass..

got any power steering rebuilders up there..  that might have a drawer of outlet fittings... lee powersteering down here has closed..

Wayne,
I have ordered an other tank with a 10an return. Mine has an 8an. I changed to synthetic fluid and it helped a lot. I will report in after the new tank and return line have been installed.

I changed the feed line and tank to a AN10 return. Now it is quiet! :D
