My son received a recall letter. I went out and checked. I have 4 of the 3 ton ones. 2 are under the recall.

My son brought replacements yesterday. These are red but look just like the others. I have no idea how the pawl inside is different. I had used mine a lot in the past. Maybe I had got a good set. :)

I read some where online, the new jack stands had issues with poor welds .

My #196 stands were returned, no questions asked.  had to sign a receipt that indicated I received the refund.  They hand you a gift card with the amount on it.  I bought 2 small dollys

HARBOR FREIGHT
To the Harbor Freight Community:

I'm writing to apologize. I often reach out to tell you about Harbor Freight's commitment to quality and all the investments we've made to deliver quality tools at the lowest prices. Your trust matters deeply to me and I'm proud of how far we've come. So when we have a product recall, it hurts.

A few months ago, we recalled our Pittsburgh 3 ton and 6 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 61196 and 61197) due to a manufacturer's defect. We asked customers to return them and receive a gift card that could be used to purchase replacement jack stands. I felt terrible about that recall because you should never have a concern about the safety of any of our products.

Today, I feel even worse. I'm disappointed and embarrassed because we've identified a welding defect in a small number of the Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKU 56373) that replaced the recalled jack stands. We're now adding these jack stands to our recall. Unfortunately, this defect wasn't discovered during the initial recall investigation. If you own these jack stands or any of the jack stands in our original recall, whether or not you have had an issue with them, please stop using them immediately and bring them back to your local Harbor Freight Store for a full cash refund or store credit (see details here).

We have investigated all of our other Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 56372 and 57308) as well as the Pittsburgh 6 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56368, 56369 and 56370) and Pittsburgh 12 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56374 and 56375) and did not find the defect. Although none of these other jack stands are being recalled, if you own any of them and have any concern whatsoever, please bring them back and we'll give you a full cash refund or store credit for those as well.

I want to apologize to all of our customers. While we've dramatically grown our team of engineers and inspectors, and intensified our tests and inspections, I assure you that the lessons learned from this will drive further improvement.

As the owner and founder of Harbor Freight, I want you to know that we stand behind every product we sell and that safety will always be our top priority.

Sincerely,

Eric Smidt

I had hoped what I read online weeks ago about poor quality welds that were failing on replacement jack stands  was just the ol interweb noise ..Guess not.

I received the same message from HF that Phil posted.

I looked my new ones over. They may be questionable. I own a welder. You can guess what I'm going to do. :)

Today was repair day. I had 2 gray ones and the 2 red replacements. I ground and rewelded all of them. The gray one's weren't part of the recall. They weren't that good. The 2 red ones were far better. One had cold welds and the other was probably fine. Now crossed off the list. :)

I had a roll pin failure today on a jack stand.  I bought these a long time ago and I do not think they were from Harbor Freight but they look a lot like the ones sold at a lot of stores.    The roll pin connects the dog to the handle to keep it from rotating and allow you to disengage the stand.  I will replace the pin with a better quality one.  I wonder if I should redrill the holes and go to a larger pin?  The pin does not appear to be load bearing.

Unless you have one that isn't drilled properly, I don't see any reason to put a larger pin in. That said, I have 4 of these. I haven't had a failure, YET! There are times I grab that handle to carry them. I wonder if that should be a no no?

i have not seen a decent brand to replace the way to easy to trip 6 ton versions i have..

i think i am going to reshape the ratchet teeth and pawl with my angle grinder..

they did work well with the weight on them.  the wooden versions were tipped up just for safety to level the car.. they were laid on their sides to allow the floor jack to be removed and keep the back of the frame off the floor..

not mine.. not a fiero.
