Hi,

I'm installing a HORN that recommends using a relay and a 30AMP fuse.

My new wiring harness dedicated HORN wire, with relay, is fused at 20AMP.

I assume LOWER amperage is OK.  Should I also install a 20AMP fuse link near the horn for extra measure?

Is it normal for horns to be rated at such a high amperage??

Thank you in advance,
Mike :P

LOUD horns need a lot of amps.

YES, the horn in question requires 30 AMPS.

Isn't that what a RELAY is for?

I guess my question is, ¿Will the 20 AMP relay suffice?
or do I have to install an inline 30 AMP FUSE and a 30 AMP relay near the horn?

I intend on calling the manufacturer after the holidays- I know there's an answer somewhere.

Thanks again,
Mike

For a 30 amp circuit under 5 ft, you need at least 14 ga wire. Over 5 ft 14 ga is marginal, but probably ok for intermittent use. If the wire is at least that big, a 30 amp relay and fuse  would be all you need.

My horn wire is 14 ga at the engine compartment.  The wire is fused at 20 AMP at the fuse box and I assume the horn relay, at the fuse box, is 20 AMP as well.

I guess my question now is whether to put an inline 30 AMP fuse and 30 AMP relay on the wire at the engine compartment attached to the horn- or attach the horn to the current wire on the 20 AMP setup.

Thanks a bunch,
Mike

If it has a Box type relay it is more than likely rated at 40 amps for the load. I would try it as it is, if it blows the fuse, and you have 14 ga wire, try a 30 amp fuse. It's an intermittent load so it should be fine.
