SamIyam was asking about 500's on the HAMB the other day. A friend of mine is building one for his Pulling Truck, so I went out and took some pics this morning.

Rods are 7" Eagles ( 425 Olds), I can't remember who makes the intake, Heads are from an outfit called Bulldog performance, Roller Rockers are actually a Ford application,ARP studs everywhere, and he went with a fabricated Oilpan.

He is putting this in a '70 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4. I think he said the Tranny & transfer case were early 70's 1-ton Chevy parts, and the Rearend is out of a later Model 1-ton. The Sway bar he put on the rearend is massive. I didn't measure it, but it looked to be near 1 1/2" round bar...

I have a feeling when he goes 4-wheeling I'll feel it in Utah as the earth's crust moves   .

the one area that has concerned me over the years on a big caddy motor is the main caps and the related webbing in the block.

These motors make a bunch of torque.

A long time friend has a stock 500 in a 3/4ton 1971 Suburban 4x4.  It will pass every thing but a gas station.  He is running some 4.10 gears and tall tires , not the gumbo monster sized tires but they are tall.

He fought heating troubles for about a year till we finally got the timing advance "initial setting  & dizzy " set up where the caddy liked it in the suburban

I've heard that they are gas guzzlers too. Won't make any difference in this truck though, I don't think he intends on driving it on the street.

Something that might interest you Tony, he was telling me that some of the 2wd "Pullers" around here are running Heavy Duty 4 speeds behind beefed up Powerglides. I guess it gives them a better range of gearing for different track conditions.

Interesting article in this month's "Enginebuilder Mag" (www.enginebuilder.com) about big Cad's.

A friend of mine is running one in an IMCA modified stock and they get over 700 hp on alcohol.

I've used them in trucks in the past, and was happy with them. I have one for future use in the stash.

You can install them in most GM chassis by using the oil pan and pickup from a 425 out of an early 80's Caddy. The accessory brackets from the 80's Caddys are good too, most of the earlier ones had an air pump. Edelbrock makes a performer intake for them too, listed for a 472/500, but it will fit a 425 by gluing the ends of the manifold to the block with silicone.
