My buddy Larry's 1935 Chevy coupe has a manual Vega steering box.  He has recently had some surgeries on his wrist and shoulders.  Now he does not have the strength and ability to move like before.  He asked me if there was an easy replacement to change his manual Vega box to power steering?

A 605 Saginaw box was used originally on Vegas for power steering. It should bolt to the frame bracket, but the Pittman shaft spline may be different, and the steering shaft length may change.

Just for a quick view, maybe check under the hood of an older S10 (or a S15 GMC). Might be easier to find than a Vega. The one on the frame under my Jeepster looks smaller than the common GM boxes. Remember that Vega boxes had an odd input shaft spline so you'll be in at a rag joint or univrsal joint change. I haven't put my foot in my mouth lately. still GPster

I believe that CCP just released a power version of the vega box. I glanced at the ad but didn't read it fully.

Some of my notes from when I updated my 64 Malibu.  Don't list Vega, but isn't a Monza just a grown up Vega?

A  list of direct bolt-on boxes and some that need modifications.   (Note this list refers to Saginaw 605 Power boxes but would probably apply to manual as well.

On some 64-70 the drag link hole on the pitman arm may need to be enlarged.

The following boxes will fit but may need to have the pitman arm and/or the rag joint changed or and extra bolt hole boss taked off the steering box. Make sure you compare the input shaft length or the length from the bolt holes to the end of the input shaft to your power box.

List was derived from Hollander Interchange Manual

Will need a pitman arm off <70s that don't have the tie rod end built in.  They may be a little hard to find, are popular with the dirt track guys and frequently get bent out of shape.

I think S-10s could also work.  Know they were in the running when I was looking for a manual box for the Model A.  Used a 70 LeMans box on it.
