I have figured out that i am putting too much pressure to the rack in the Stude. I need to limit it. I have a stock GM pump. Should I use a Heidts valve or a Borgeson kit?  I have to change the rack as it is beginning to leak internally.

thats a neat valve..

do you have any power steering pump rebuilders around...

can you use a few drill bits to measure the opening in the hose adaptor threaded into the back of the pump????

smaller openings will reduce flow and also reduce pressure...

there are several different types of threads where the pressure hose attaches...    SAE inverted flare....   metric  with an Oring seal...

you might want to stop by a junk yard.. pull the plug from a early cavalier pump...  and measure it...   several others use a similar rack...

there are also ways to change the amount of washers under the head of the slide valve to change the MAX pressure the pump can make...

why does reducing the flow reduce the pressure..  the rack needs a certain amount of flow..... if you exceed that flow... you build more pressure...   so reducing the flow... reduces the flow and the line pressure at the unit...

what year cavalier did you use the rack from...

this is the pressure fitting on the cav pump for an 85...

i don't know if item 23 will swap from the small pump into the big pump...

looks like there is also a slightly different part number ending in 99 instead of 98...  similar item... probably a different size...

I used a www.billetspecialties.com 2 GPH Flow Control Valve.
Click on Engine Dress-up, then click on Power steering components.
It uses a AN #6 hose for $24.95.
There number 1-800-245-5382. This took care of my Twitchey Steering.

Frank can fill in the blanks for me,but he once posted the use of a chrysler horizon/omni pump or pump outlet will cat the pressure down.

The Omni/Horizon pump is a Saginaw pump, set at a lower pressure for the racks used in those days. You can just switch the pressure valve into any GM pump to reduce the pressure.

So is that the fitting in the rear and the spring etc?

yes, including the valve inside the fitting.
