I've driven some real DZ  302 powered Camaros... with the optional Duntov camshafts and other tweaks we had around during the high school years.

After 3800 - 4000 RPM , geez  those engines came to life

years ago I was instructed to order timing chain and gears for pre 72 engines because almost every engine had cam timing retarded by 2degrees from 72 on in order to pass smog tests.

Yes, that was really common because the retarded cam would build less combustion heat and therefore produce lower NOX.
