Ford 9" narrowing pictorial and tech on how this is don

I have only narrowed one 9" so i might not know what I'm talking about. I cut the weld where the tube slides into the center section and slid the tube out. It was in the center 4" which is the exact amout I needed to narrow the rear end. I cut the 4" off, slid the tube back in the center secton and tacked it. I took it to a local guy with a jig since I didn't think i'd ever do another one so I wouldn't need my own jig, and he jigged it and welded it up.  He said he had never seen anyone cut the tube out of the center and wondered aloud why.  I just didn't know any better.  :D

I do mine like phat 46. I cut through the welds at the housing ends,then cut the housing to length and slip the ends back in. I cut mine in the lathe, it makes for a nice cut.I built a fixture to do narrowing years ago. Once you have a fixture its not much more work than shortening a driveshaft.
