I have been building a column for the 32 coupe I have here. This is what I have so far.

It started out as a 37 Ford truck column, the owner of the car wants the original type ignition in it. I had to move the column drop toward the wheel 3" to make the car "sit" right. So I sectioned 3" out of the column above the lock. This meant the lock mechanism had to be moved up on the shaft 3" On the other end of the shaft, I grafted a splined end to attach it to a Ujoint for the intermediate shaft. This gave me no place to run the wire for the horn button. So I made  a slip ring with a wire attached that ran up the inside of the shaft to the wheel. I then made a brush and holder that bolts to the top of the column just behind the ignition switch for the horn wire. After sleeving the joint in the shaft, that part was done.

I needed new bushings for the column, the originals were rubber with a brass sleeve, I made new ones out of aluminum with a bronze Oillite liner. The bottom one has a collar top and bottom to hold the shaft in the correct position.

I bought a new switch, and key lock from Mac's. So after paint and assembly, it will be ready to install.

*: You're a clever rascal Frank. I did something like that with nylon bushing and Corvair spline shaft to a '54 Ford shaft. Hey- it turns.LOL

Well done and clever it is.

What's the OD on the Ford column jacket?

What is the device in the first photo?

The column is  1 1/2" The device in the first picture is a brush that picks up the current for the horn from the slip ring on the shaft.

Thanks.

Always like to see how others build columns.

Horn wiring etc. is not part of one I've done so far....
