I had a problem with my starter on the 350 SBC I have in my 36 Sedan. Went to a show as part of the Dream Cruise and when we went to leave it would only grind. Hell of a way to end a show... Thanks to my AAA pluws I got home. Anyway..........

In the process of troubleshooting I found out the starter for my engine is different than the one I put on originally. My block is vintage 1989 but I used a starter I had which was "new" a couple years ago. Turns out that the 89 starter is different than my earlier model. The bendix extends further out to engage the fly wheel.

When did the model change? I put this out to possibly save someone else a stranded on the road issue. Fortunately I did not do great harm to the fly wheel. A couple spots are worn but a correct starter meshes just find no grinding and on drop out.

Just curious when the change over model year is if anyone knows...

Several years ago i had that same problem with a SBC starter. I fought with it for a couple months, I put two or three different starters on it and they would work for a short period. I shimmed them every way possible and was at my wits end. I finally took it to the "performance" repair place in town. They assured me it was "just a shim problem" three day later they called and said they were stumped, they even tried their "Good shop starter" and replaced the flexplate. They finally took the starter and the block numbers down the street to the starter/alternatoer rebuilders and they said that my engine took a "different" starter. It is a '72 truck block and needed the longer nose cone and bendex for a longer throw. They got the correct starter and I have had it on for probably eight years without any problems. The starter shop said to always check the block numbers...and never to buy a starter at AutozonePepboysAoutoworksMurraysEtc.....  In other words i have no idea when they changed starters on the SBC...

This list of starters is just a start... I have been trying to put this list together for years... this is the first time I had both books out at the same time. Along with some time to do it..  I will progress.. with links to pictures.. but just having a list of part numbers will help...

How to tell a low torque starter from a high torque...   look at the copper lead out of the case that attaches to the bottom post on the starter solenoid ... if it is a single thickness.. low torque...  if it is a double thickness.. it is a high torque..

The first numbers are starter numbers...  the C numbers are the ACE electric part number for the starter nose..

these are the full sized starters...

3508, 3510     C2709 NOSE, 3/8" holes 2 staggered pattern long bolts

3631, 3663, 3664, 3800, 3838, 4345    C2717 NOSE, NARROW SHIFT LEVER, 3/8" bolts , one long, one short bolt straight  pattern

or

3631, 3663, 3664    C2786 NOSE WIDE shift LEVER 3/8" bolts long and short straight pattern..

3510M, 3559M, 3831   C3519 NOSE 10MM BOLTS, 2 staggered long bolts

4347   C2776 NOSE    two 3/8" bolts cast iron   straight pattern this one seems to fit large flywheels and flex plates.

5MT STARTERS these are the small gm starters.

3553M, 6316, 6320, 6334 NOSE C3534 10MM HOLES, long /short bolts straight pattern

3562, 3569M, 6313M 6332, C3536 10MM HOLES, two long staggered bolts

3502   NOSE C3504 3/8" one long, one short bolt, straight pattern
3502M NOSE C3520

the narrow shift levers are 2 pieces welded ][ back to back
narrow where the pivot pin goes through..

wide shift levers are stamped from one piece and folded 2 times   ]_[   ..
wide where the pin goes through...

17091 these are PMGR starters...
17129

Chevy starters... that seem to have applications with chevy V8 engines... from about 66 to 92....

one might also want to inspect the newer numbers   these are perm magnet starters do not hit or drop them..
these probably use metric bolts.. it does not say..
6449   staggered pattern, two long bolts  (94-01 4.3, 5.0, 5.7, 6.0, 7.0, 7.4, 8.1 chevy/gmc lt trucks, Suv, vans)

editing.. see this one snuck in there

3608   http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znetcs/product-info/en/US/vlu/3608/image/8/   but the 3608 could be the wrong picture...

I have a Delco Mini Starter #1108429. It is a 3hp gear reduction starter that weighs 7 lbs. I was having trouble starting when it was hot. It seemed like I had a bad battery. I changed to this starter I have no more problems.
You can buy it on EBAY for $54.95. They are about $150.00 at auto parts stores.
You can always get a Powermaster mini starter #9200 from Jegs or Summit for $190.00. This is for a 168 tooth flywheel.

model a vette

According to what I can find on the 'net "1108429" is the original number for a 454 starter and is the old big starter.

Do you have a number for the mini starter?
