hi,

I did some test drives of a Nomad that was in the shop last week... we installed a fresh transmittin and the trans  needed some fine tuning.

My test drive  area is mostly industrial  in the west  McDowell Road and I-17 area of Phoenix.

In the test rides , I've never had so many people wave, honk , hang out the window yelling "* car"  as happened in this 57 chevy.

I've test  driven street rods , coupes , hi-boys, Willys and never had this much attention before.

oh , I know when folks are looking at me.. the laughter and / or pointing gives that away.

I learned that from tomslik as folks laughed at his driving while he spent 10 minutes  to park his truck when I visited him in Colorado

There's probably no more iconic classic car than the 57 in the public mind. Covered in arrest-me-red paint it'll stand out more. Nice car.

Yep that's a nice 57 there.

Heh, heh, this subject has touched a soft spot of mine, so I will expound a little.

I think most all of us here are are into 'distinctive' rides for the eye appeal of the innocent bystanders and fellow motorists.

I know I've always driven quite distinctive rides, I had my 31 Coupe in high school and at the time thinking it was the ultimate 'chick magnet' and unforturnately found it to be more of a 'chick repeller', at least I think it was the cars fault. Anyhow on several occasions female riders would make comments on how 'scary' riding in the car was.

In my senior year of high school I got a part time job in addition to my afterschool apprentice mechanic job, of working for the local phone company. Think it had something to do with a class credit thing, don't quite remember why. Anyhow, back in those days the phone company 'owned' all the phone equipment, so when folks failed to pay their phone bill or when folks moved from a residence, someone had to go and pickup the phone equipment. That was my weekend job. Also back in those days the phone company vehicles were all painted olive drab green with a bell logo on the doors. I got to drive a 1960 Ford sedan for my work. In driving to work in my Model A I was used to being 'noticed' all the way to work, but when driving back out in the 60 Ford I was a bit embarrassed that friends might see me in that company car. I soon realized after a bit that for all practical purposes that car was invisible to the viewing public, it never turned any heads and it's 'eyepopping jawdrop' quotient was zero.

Anywho, this started my lifelong study of  'eyepopping jawdrop' and head turning effects of the various rides I have had thru the years.

Recently I've been driving my 40 Ford, 61 Chrysler and 67 Dodge Charger in a somewhat regular rotation for my driving needs. Much to my surprise and some dismay, I've noticed that my 40 Ford has not been garnering the looks that I've expected when cruising down the street or stopped at stoplights. I mean it gets some looks, but nothing like what my other 2 rides get. Actually it appears that between my 61 Chrysler, which I've always kinda joked was my 'Batmobile' and my 67 Charger which I kinda consider to be my 'New Car', that the Charger seems to get the most 'Eyepopping Jawdrop' looks and turned heads.

I'm a bit baffled, now I know this is purely subjective and that I might be a bit prejudiced, but still there definitely seems to be more action with my Charger than with my Chrysler. Oh yeah, they all get noticed at the gas pump at fillup time. Sometimes I think maybe my 40 Ford might be suffering from a bit of 'PT Cruiser' syndrome, because it does resemble a late model PT Cruiser, but I'm at a loss to wonder why the Charger gets more looks than my 61 Chrysler with the Batmobile Fins. OH now I do notice that the 61 Chrysler gets a lot more 'thumbs up' from hardcore bikers than either of the other two.

Oh another thing that I picked up on in my lifelong study was that frequently when giving rides to newly aquainted babes, they almost always would mention how 'everyone was looking at us' and I would just chuckle.

It took a while to get into the restaurant....  tomslik was all worried about  'tow away zone" , parking next to a stop sign....  silly stuff.

Boy what a relief.  When I saw the title of this thread I was afraid I was going to see a '57 Nomad mounted on a '71 Chevy 4X4 chassis.  Love those Nomads, had two '55s just after high school.

I've seen a 4x4 Nomad.

A buddy had a 71 4x4 truck with a 454 in it. It got wrecked badly when his wife drove it into his 69 COPO Camero at a motel when she caught him with another woman.
