brakelight relay

A friend is trying to fix the brakelights on his girlfriends  '97 Chevy Venture van. We have traced wires and power from the battery to the brakeligt switch but still no brakelights. While testingthe plug or the brakelight switch we couldhear a relay clicking. He checked laterand found that he could buy a brakelight realy for this vehicle. The vehicle is now in a differentcity and i d't have access to i. He can't find the brakeligt realy on it. I know it's not in the "relay center" under the hod adnot visible from where we could see with the lower dash panels removed. He bought a manual for the van and i has no reference to  brakelight relay  all. Does anyoneknow if this thing even has a realy for the brakeligts and wherei's located? The wires coming out of he brakelight switch are really small so i think it must have a relay somewhere.

i did not see any tail or turn signal relay other than the antitheft relay that seems to be able to flash the tail lights...


and are you really sure it is a 97.....


by the way.... there are 2 or 3 pairs of wires to the brake light switch...  depends on the transmission..  looks like the white wire goes to the tail lights.  i cannot read the other color on the print


if it is newer than Y2K it might have a CAN setup.. (controller area network, which means each lamp has assy has a chip)


one last thing i would check... i don't know if it is possible... but make sure the brake light bulbs are #3057...  i have been wondering if a 3056 would fit in the socket... that would void the brake lights connection to the terminals in the socket... as a 3056 only has one filiment.. the 3057 has 2....

Thanks Wayne.  I am sure it's a '97 and we replaced the brakelight bulbs while I while I there and we did use the 3057's. I'll look over the diagrams and other info you posted and see what i can find.
